A day at the house

The yellow house among the trees with morning fog in the valley behind

Morning

Wake up, step outside, and watch the morning fog lift with a coffee in hand — no need to leave the room. The master suite is the heart of it: a queen bed, an ensuite bath, and a door that opens up to your own walk-out terrace with sweeping views over the valley and mountains.

Top-down aerial view of the house and farm

Midday

The house sits on a working 2-acre organic farm bursting with tropical fruit — banana, annona, sapote, breadfruit, corazón, avocado, mamey, soursop, sugar cane and pineapple, plus whatever the mountain decides to grow next. Depending on the season you're welcome to pick and eat straight from the tree; just ask what's ripe. The cows next door come to the fence. Kids love it here.

Covered patio lounge set looking out over the valley

Afternoon

Two terraces, two moods. Up top, the master's walk-out terrace with the panoramic valley view and a table for long breakfasts. Down the stairs, the covered patio sits level with the garden, with a lounge set, two hammocks, and the hot tub a few steps away. When evening comes, fire up the BBQ and eat under the open sky.

Night

Then there's the hot tub — private, all yours, and best enjoyed after a day of exploring, under a canopy of stars. On clear, moonless nights you can often make out the Milky Way.

Utuado and the coffee mountains

La Casita Amarilla is nestled in the lush, quiet coffee mountains of barrio Caguana, Utuado, right in the heart of Puerto Rico's central mountains.

The neighborhood offers a peaceful, rural escape where you'll wake up to birdsong and the sound of coquí frogs, far away from the hustle of the tourist coast. Yet, you aren't isolated: a grocery store, a pharmacy and Utuado's town plaza are all a short drive away. It's the ideal basecamp for exploring Taíno historical sites, river swimming spots, and neighboring coffee towns like Jayuya and Adjuntas.

By car from the house

5 minutes
A grocery store and pharmacy right on the main road.
10 minutes
The Caguana Indigenous Ceremonial Park, a National Historic Landmark and one of the largest and most important pre-Columbian sites in the West Indies, with Taíno ball courts and petroglyphs.
15 minutes
The Tanamá River, where local outfitters run guided river-cave trips, river hikes, ziplines and rappelling (reservations are required; ask what is running when you book), plus Café Gran Batey, a coffee farm that takes visitors by appointment (call ahead).
15 minutes
In the other direction, Utuado's town plaza, restaurants, bakery and supermarkets.
25 minutes
Río Abajo State Forest, with shaded trails; the island's endangered parrot has been reintroduced here.
40 minutes
The Arecibo Observatory site, now a science center at the famous former telescope (open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays; reserve tickets online at least a day ahead), the white-rock canyon of Cañón Blanco (a place to look rather than swim: the river can rise a lot, and quickly), and a small-batch coffee farm tour at Sandra Farms in Adjuntas.
About an hour
Jayuya's Hacienda San Pedro coffee farm, which dates from 1931, Casa Pueblo in Adjuntas, and Cerro de Punta, Puerto Rico's highest peak.
1.5 hours
San Juan and the airport.
